Connecting Cities - Antimonuments for alien agency

13:45 - 14:45

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer is one of Montréal’s most prolific, technologically-innovative and internationally-respected artists. His artistic practice is situated at the intersection of electronic arts, architecture and interactive performance art.

For Lozano-Hemmer, an artwork cannot exist without its audience. He explores topics like perception, subterfuge and surveillance by perverting technologies such as robotics, computerized surveillance or telematic networks and invites his audience to reevaluate the urban environments they are familiar with.

Evolving around the concept of “relational architecture,” the artist’s public installations are platforms for public participation and manifestations of antimonuments. His light and shadow works are inspired by phantasmagoria, carnival and animatronics.

By presenting his work and concepts, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer will prepare the field for the three axes along which the Connecting Cities Network as well as the symposium evolve: the Networked City, the Participatory City, and the Visible City.

All symposium activities take place in English.
